Kaylee is Serenity's resident mechanic and engineer and is more comfortable in the sky than on the ground.
Kaylee has three passions: engines, strawberries, and Dr. Simon Tam.
She first got her job when she was discovered canoodling(and more) with
the ship's one-track-minded mechanic, Bester.
She fixed the reg couple, which had grounded the ship for half a week and Captain Reynolds was so impressed with her know-how he hired her on the spot, despite her total lack of experience with that model of ship.
She went off to ask her folks, and has been aboard ever since...
Kaylee is irrpresibly cheerful, and has an innate knowledge of machines and how they work.
At the same time, she can be flummoxed by particularly difficult problems ("Sometimes, a thing gets broke, it can't be fixed.") or by someone who sets out to break a machine instead of fix it, which seems a fundamentally foreign concept to her. (As when Saffron sabotages Serenity... twice.)
The crew's occasional forays into crime don't bother her, though she's not much good in a gunfight.
